Viking Raid We crossed the whale’s bath from the North, Our brine stallions pulled up on the strand, Now we stood on the Saxon’s land, Fyrdmen from all the farms poured forth. My heart was pounding under heavy mail, My helm was hot under Sunna’s heat, Sand was soft ‘neath our soft shoed feet, My first battle, I mustn’t fail. The Saxon fyrd formed up in line, Our Jarl called us to do the same, Some will die but live on in fame, The fyrd come on, its nearly time. We stood easy, shields by our sides, Sword and axe in scabbard or belt, Waited for blows of death to be dealt, Some will tonight in Valhol abide. “SHIELDWALL!!” was shouted, one clash of shields, We stood firmly rooted, oaks of battle, A forest of ash behind us, Iron tipped with death crashed onto our shields. We stood ready, sword then in hand, Shields overlapping, there we stood, Dry mouthed and sweat, stung our eyes, Saxons then closed, with our war-band. Shoulder to the shield, mustn’t break through, Shield boss to shield boss, eye to eye, Couldn’t raise my sword, pressed close in, Sudden shout, a huscarl broke through. Saxons now had our men behind, Confusion and chaos then ruled, Axes and swords then freely sang, Fyrd retreated back to their kind. Hot in pursuit, blood lust was high, Hacking and slashing, stabbing with spears, Saxon women wailed and shed tears, Whilst the last of the fyrdmen died. We drank wine we stole from the church, Killing the priest, took what had worth, There was some gold, silver and mead, Saxon women left in the lurch. Glad to survive and return to sea, Homeward bound and glad to be free, Glad to survive my first sea raid, Proud to have new blood on my blade.
