Vincent of the Day: This speaks to the Romantic in me, and speaks - TopicsExpress

Vincent of the Day: This speaks to the Romantic in me, and speaks of a more pensive and contemplative side of Vincent than the ever visionary seer of the intensity of life in its lucidity and vitality. I enjoy so much this pause to consider and reflect on the nuances of life, that it is not always vibrant energetic pulsating rhythm, and not always a starlit universe, but there is a calmer and more tempered aspect of life, and I think Vincent saw all of this, although, as prone to depression as he was, and as many of us who are can relate to this, he chose to depict the bounty of life and escape from what he might see as a darkness, but perhaps here, he saw, as I see, not a darkness, but a profound beauty in the calm, and the still and the vastness, that in this reductive overcast and subdued state, causes one to revert inwardly, and perhaps this is just what Vincent did not like to do, but on this occasion, with the boats, the fisherman, and the aspect of humanity visualized and conceptualized before him, he found comfort here, and in this very controlled painting, with so few hues and tonalities, in such a limited range, he was able to find peace in the storm and not a fearfulness and this is strength and nothing but. So beautiful.
