Vintage-Inspired Hair In a sea of no-fuss beach waves, ponytails, and top knots, one will always stand out with a polished, vintage-inspired ‘do. Believe it or not, there was a time when women didn’t dream of leaving the house unless their hair had been set to perfection. Whether hair was slicked into finger waves during ’20s, or reaching soaring heights in the ’60s by way of the beehive, women put far more elbow grease into achieving proper coiffures. 1. Finger Waves Finger waves were invented in the ’20s and ’30s to add flair to the bob haircuts that were in vogue. Many Hollywood stars of the time, from silent film star Clara Bow to jazz performer Josephine Baker, also helped propel the wavy style to popularity. 2. Hair Scarf Second day hair is not just a modern day phenomenon, and when ladies of yore encountered the hair conundrum, they piled their mane atop their head and adorned it with a head scarf. 3. Bouffant While bouffants are synonymous with the ’60s, they’ve became a classic on the evening hair agenda. But as Brigitte Bardot taught us well, there’s nothing wrong with sporting the teased look around the clock. 4. Beehive For some women, more is more, and that means that a bouffant wasn’t always enough of a statement. Enter the beehive, which takes heaps more back-combing and hair spray, and naturally, is not for the faint of heart. 5. Victory Roll Due to the fabric rationing during World War II, ’40s hairstyles grew more elaborate to make up for lack of frock and victory rolls were a classic of the time. You don’t need to be a pin-up to sport them, but they do require a good deal of patience. 6. Rita Hayworth Curls While she could cut a rug and own the silver screen like no other, Hayworth was also iconic for her beauty – particularly her dark red hair, which was always curled to perfection. 7. French Twist (Roll) The French twist was a force to be reckoned with beginning in the ’60s, when women could take their dull ponytails, twist, and turn them into an entirely sophisticated style with ease (with practice, of course). Master this look, and you’ll look polished even on those days when you hit the snooze button one too many times.
