Virginians: An update of the bad bills: Never doubt that your emails can make a difference! Richmond legislators told us last week they received numerous emails opposing bills we had identified as anti-transit and pro-sprawl. Now, legislators have rejected five of those bills. Gone are two bills that would have severely reduced funding for transit, and three bills that would have taken away local control and forced more transportation funding toward sprawl-inducing highways. But bad bills remain and we still need your help! So keep it coming! Please email your legislators today (even if you already sent an email last week). smartergrowth.net/take-action/ Urge them to reject the remaining bills that would: Prioritize state spending on highways over transit, local roads, and bicycle and pedestrian improvements Limit local governments’ ability to foster sustainable transit-oriented development Require a redundant study of additional lanes on I-66 inside the beltway, against the wishes of local residents (this bill was amended -- it originally required VDOT to build four new lanes) Mandate VDOT advance new Potomac River bridge crossings even though these crossings would fuel sprawl and divert investment from fixing priority commuter corridors (Read our detailed analysis of the bills here.) Weve seen the benefits of investing in smart growth and reliable transit in Virginia. Thats because our metropolitan regions would truly choke on traffic and air pollution if we didnt provide real alternatives to driving for every trip. So we need to stop the remaining bills that would cut spending on transit projects and those that force VDOT to pursue redundant studies for two particularly wasteful highway projects. Please email your legislators today! One bill is on the floor today and the others go before committees this week. >> Thank you, Aimee -- Aimee Custis Coalition for Smarter Growth [email protected]
