Visiting today the WW1 War Museum in Kobarid/Tolmin Slovenia. The scene of the awful Italian debacle (Caporetto) which inspired Hemingways “Farewell To Arms”. On the anniversary of the opening of hostilities of 1914, I am struck by the sad futility of the carnage and, after 100 years, in time you would have thought wed learned a thing or two. On the contrary, judging by this shameful parade of dodgy “royal” fops dressed as fancy toy soldiers waving national flags - I guess that would be NOT. Its as if the spiteful waste of a generation sent blithely to their deaths in appalling conditions counts for absolutely nothing. Thats what we need to be remembering, and not trying to cajole a spasm of tired jingoism. That simply cheapens the memory of the young men sent to be slaughtered by covetous monarchs and their armchair generals.
