Voces Del Valle is a powerful musical performance and fundraiser in memory of the lives of Mimi & Louie Del Valle, beloved members of the Broome County community. This event to be held on Sat. Nov. 23rd, 2013, 8pm at The Lost Dog Cafes Violet Room, will feature performances by Mimi and Louie’s daughters, Taína Asili and Ayana D. The proceeds from this event will go towards two important scholarship funds: The Mimi and Louie Del Valle Latino/a Achievement Award, based at Binghamton University; and The Mimi Del Valle Scholarship, part of Binghamton High Schools Dollars for Scholars program. Mimi and Louie Del Valle moved to Broome County in the 1970’s when they came to study at SUNY Binghamton. From that point onward, they worked tirelessly dedicating their lives to create a space for Latinos in our community, first by founding the Latin American Student Union at SUNY Binghamton and later through their community work with organizations such as Latinos Unidos. Their professional lives were also committed to a deep vision of bettering the lives of disadvantaged youth. Louie Del Valle worked for Binghamton University’s Educational Opportunities program for over 25 years, while Mimi Del Valle worked for many years at Educational Talent Search. Together they transformed the lives of thousands of young people. In 2005 Mimi Del Valle passed away from complications during a liver transplant. Two years later in 2007, Louis Del Valle passed away from cancer. But their legacy lives on… Their daughters Taína Asili and Ayana D. will join together in their second benefit concert. Powerful vocalist Taína Asili performs as a mesmerizing duet of Latin American folk and flamenco with guitarist Gaetano Vaccaro (AsiliVaccaro). She is also known for her work with the six piece international ensemble, Taína Asili y la Banda Rebelde (the Rebel Band), based in Albany, NY (TainaAsili). Taina has toured the nation numerous times and has performed internationally from Mexico to Spain. Ayana D. (AyanaD) is a dynamic vocal entertainer who has performed throughout the US and Caribbean. Described as the Latina Alicia Keys, she has performed at the world renowned Carnegie Hall three times now, among other prominent venues. Ayana and Taína are proud to bring together their work their parents honor.
