Vol. IV, #006, 9/13/13 POGO’S PREDICTION “We will not waver; we will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail. Peace and freedom will prevail.” George W. Bush after the 911 attacks. “I know that after the terrible toll of Iraq and Afghanistan, the idea of any military action, no matter how limited, is not going to be popular.” President Obama regarding military action in Syria. It is my concerted opinion that one of these guys was wrong, and one was essentially right. I believe President Bush, whom I liked and voted for twice, was wrong. Peace and freedom has NOT prevailed. Our world is in worse shape today than it was 12 years ago when America was attacked. Yes, we might have “girded up our self-protective loins” somewhat, and dispatched a few infidels, but the threat still remains, and no one feels truly safe. On the other hand, President Obama was understated, but almost correct. To say that military action against yet another Middle Eastern country is not going to be popular is like predicting that a category five hurricane might send a little rain our way. If our country doesn’t want it, congress is prepared to vote against it, our military is stretched to the point that the word “draft” is popping up at roundtable discussions, and, as the president said, “We are not the world’s police force” then what on earth are we getting ourselves into? Some say it’s just another of the president’s brilliant strategic speeches in which he doesn’t mean a single thing he says. I made the comment one day that, “America was originally created as ‘one nation under God,’ and that if we were ever to restore our power base then we must return to that state.” I was challenged by one of my readers … a strong Christian, who said, “That sounds nice, but it is impossible to do.” Citing Scripture from the book of Amos [Can two walk together, except they be agreed?] he pointed out that the philosophical differences between America’s political parties are so diverse, so diametrically and viciously opposed to one another as to virtually eliminate any attempts to cross party lines, and come together for the good of the country. I don’t like to admit it, but he may have a valid point. A critic once said to me, “When God issued ‘brains,’ you must have heard ‘trains’ and said you’d like a caboose.” Perhaps he was right, but never-the-less, here’s what I think: It just may be that we have become so politically self-absorbed and arrogant that the importance of political party loyality has initiated the destruction of the republic for which we used to stand. Pogo (a possum) said, “We have met the enemy … and it is us.” Chriss Jami (An American writer) said, “The spirit of arrogance most definitely makes us shine. It paints a bright red target on our own forehead. From the time I was old enough to understand it, I have heard that we are living in the final days before the predictions of the book of Revelation pan out. Although I believed that it would some day happen, never before have I seen such evidence as I am witnessing now. Maybe I’m just getting old and it all seems more vivid. I cannot predict when God will come again … none of us can. But, the promise was made … and it may well be the only thing that can fix the mess we have created. One day, things will change. The Bible says, “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. (Revelation 21:4, KJV). Right now, there are a bunch of circumstances that are out of our control. We seem to invite international conflict, we can’t find a cure to this awful disease of cancer, we are witnessing major cities in our country going broke one after another, and on and on it goes. But there is one thing we CAN control … and that is our own spiritual destiny. If you haven’t taken the steps to do so, I would strongly encourage it. Not only does it reserve a place for you later, but it offers a bit of comfort given the issues we are all dealing with these days. (16 requests for prayer.)
