Volleyball Weekend Wrap-up 9.7.2014 | Portsmouth, OH Kentucky Christian’s volleyball team traveled to Portsmouth, OH to play in a weekend tournament at Shawnee State University. The Lady Knights would take on the University of Northwestern Ohio, Montreat College and the host Bears of Shawnee State during the weekend’s play. First up for KCU were the Racers of UNWO. Northwestern Ohio entered the match with a record just below the .500 level but this was not an indication of their abilities. While competing through an extremely difficult early season schedule, the Racers were definitely on an uptick. The Lady Knights dropped an extremely competitive first set 21-25 and followed that with a close second set loss at 20-25. Down two sets, KCU was determined to make a match of it only to lose n the third and final set by a 24-26 score. Kentucky Christian was led offensively by Magen Daniel (Sr) with nine kills and the duo for Jenna Kelley (Sr0 and Claire Speweik (Fr) with six kill each. Senior setter, Lauren Dunn, accounted for 25 assists and one service ace. On the defensive side, Jessi Hartzler (Sr) paced the team with 21 digs followed by Jill Forbear-Turner’s 16 digs. Daniel added one solo block and 2 assisted block for KCU. Saturday’s opening match saw the Lady Knights play SSU and it was another quality performance for both teams. After splitting the first two sets with identical 25-23 scores, the Bears routed KCU in the third set by a 25-14 score. The squad dropped a much more competitive fourth and final set by a 25-21 score. Again, Daniel paced the team with 12 kills but this time Kylie Rice (Jr) and Kelley chipped in nine kills in support while Abbi McIlhany (So) added seven to the team total. Daniel, Kelley and Speweik were big at the net defensively as they each tallied at least one solo and one assisted block. Closer to the floor, Hartzler and Dunn provided 24 and 18 digs, respectively. Montreat College (NC) was the final opponent for Kentucky Christian on Saturday and it turned out to be a very entertaining match for the large crowd of fans in attendance. MC took set one by a 25-18 score only to watch the Lady Knights capture the next two sets with scores of 26-24 and 25-21. Not to be outdone, Montreat won set four at 26-24 setting up the fifth and final set. KCU squeaked out a 15-13 win in the set and the match win as well. Again, Daniel led a very balanced attack by producing 15 kills followed by Speweik (14), Rice (12), Kelley (10) and McIlhany (8). Dunn orchestrated the balanced attack with 50 assists and was credited with eight defensive digs. The Hartzler/Forbear-Turner duo had 49 digs collectively.
