Volunteers for HEALTH Message 15 : Water Purification Disinfection of wells (to prevent water borne diseases) 1. Calculate roughly the volume of water of the well. [ V (litres) = (0.785 X D² X H) X 1000 ] Where D = Diameter of well in meters, H = Height of water in the well in meters. The above formula gives the amount of water in the well in litres. 2.If the quality of bleaching powder is good then 2.5 grams of bleaching powder would be required to disinfect 1000 litres of water. 3. The calculated amount of bleaching powder is placed in a bucket and made into a paste by adding a small quantity of water to it. More water is added till the bucket is nearly three-fourth full. The contents are mixed well and allowed to settle down for 5 to 10 minutes when the lime settles down. The superficial clear solution which is nothing but the chlorine solution is transferred to another bucket, and the bottom thick part is discarded. 4.The metal bucket containing the chlorine solution is lowered some distance below the water surface and the well water is agitated by moving the bucket violently both vertically and laterally. 5.A contact period of one hour is allowed before the water is drawn for use.
