Vote “Yes” Nov 5 Fact Sheet #2 Prepared by the League of Women Voters of Muncie-Delaware County munciedelaware.in.lwvnet.org/ Like us on Facebook! 75% of all Muncie School students are on free and reduced lunch. The families of these students may not be able to get them to school in a timely fashion each day. Expecting an elementary student to walk 3 ½ miles, or a middle school student to walk 6 miles, often without sidewalks, is both unreasonable and dangerous. Safety and equal access to education are the two most important reasons to vote “Yes”. Don’t be fooled by selective misleading information MYTH: MCS targeted bus transportation to seek additional funding. FACT: IN legislation HEA 1072 forces school districts to absorb the full property tax cap effect only in funds for bus transportation, capital expenses, and bus replacement. Using 2013 figures, transportation will lose $3.35M, leaving less than $750K. (See Note 1 on back) MYTH: MCS’s high per student cost demonstrates that money for busing can be found elsewhere. FACT: The $18,000 figure being quoted dates from 2008. MCS cost per student is skewed by the Special Ed Cooperative (7 districts in 2 counties), Vocational Ed Region (4 counties) and YOC for which MCS is fiscal agent. Adjusting to include only MCS students, the MCS K-12 per pupil cost is $12,092 (state average $11,538). (See Note 2 on back) MYTH: Homeowners [owner-occupied homes] will see an increase of almost $400 per $100,000 of assessed valuation. FACT: Homeowners have deductions that bring the tax impact per $100,000 assessed valuation down to $141 or less. That’s less than $12 per month.
