Voting has officially gone live! Please vote and share! **Please help Aceh get the support it needs by VOTING for Ecosystem Impact in the Hivos Social Innovation Award 2014** For the past four months I have been living and working out of Aceh, Indonesia, working on the development of a really exciting set of projects with Ecosystem Impact - an organisation working to help support the people and growth trajectory of Aceh towards a more sustainable and greener future. Some of you may have heard of Aceh because of its amazing biodiversity and incredible ecosystems, some of you may have even been out here and experienced its culture, history and beautiful people or more sadly, some of you may have heard of Aceh because of the devastating 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami 10 years ago - Aceh was the hardest-hit area in the 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, with more than 500,000 people displaced, 120,000 people dead, and total damages and losses estimated at $4.5 billion. Aceh is filled by strong and determined people, but it is also weakened by unsustainable drivers for short-term economic gains, that are not even filtrating through to the general population. In Aceh there is an urgent need to transition to a Green Economy. Aceh’s unparalleled natural resources contain some of the richest biodiversity left on the planet, yet over 35% of its forests remain under threat from environmental destruction fuelled by unsustainable motivations for short-term economic gain. This is the last place on earth where critically endangered tigers, orangutans, rhinos and elephants occur together. Aceh’s forests provide vital ecosystem services sustaining millions of local people and serving the global community as a significant carbon sink. A turbulent history marred by prolonged conflict and the devastating 2004 Boxing Day tsunami has Aceh still reeling with rural poverty pushing 20%. Ecosystem Impact is working to ensure financially sustainable origination and incubation support gets to local green businesses along buffer zones of high-value conservation areas. This will generate improved employment opportunities while reducing carbon emissions. It will enhance food security, community development, social equity, energy, water and resource efficiency, and prevent the loss of precious biodiversity and invaluable ecosystem services. Ecosystem Impact is addressing the underlying causes of environmental destruction and poverty in Aceh, reorienting economic growth trajectories to complement traditional conservation, policy and advocacy work. Please help to support our organisation and get the Hovis Social Innovation Award to help us we move forward as an organisation and offer the support and guidance that so many local, hard working and emerging businesses of Aceh needs. You can vote up to THREE times for us by following the link below - please help us get our voice heard to help get the support Aceh needs! Share with your family and friends who too can appreciate the value in supporting a Green Economy and stronger future for Aceh - culturally, economically and environmentally.
