#WA BOM Update for developing T/Low Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology Western Australia Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre Media: The Standard Emergency Warning Signal should NOT be used with this warning. PRIORITY TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 2 Issued at 3:14 pm WST on Tuesday 23 December 2014 Headline: Developing tropical low heading towards Cocos Keeling Islands Areas Affected: Warning Zone None. Watch Zone The Cocos Keeling Islands. Cancelled Zone None. Details of Tropical Low at 12:30pm CCT (2:00pm WST) Intensity: Category below cyclone intensity, 85 kilometres per hour and intensifying. Location: within 45 kilometres of 9.5 degrees South 100.4 degrees East, estimated to be 490 kilometres northeast of Cocos Island. Movement: south southwest at 2 kilometres per hour. The low is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone on Wednesday and possibly reach category two intensity by Christmas Day in the vicinity of Cocos Islands. Hazards: Gales are not expected on the islands today or early Wednesday, but may develop Wednesday night as the system moves closer and intensifies. The period of greatest risk is expected on Thursday (Christmas Day), as the system passes the islands. Destructive winds with gusts to 150 kilometres per hour are possible depending on the movement of the system. Heavy rain is expected during Wednesday and particularly on Thursday. Recommended Action: The Australian Federal Police advise that there are no community alerts at present. Communities on Home and West Island should listen for the next advice. Next Advice: The next advice will be issued by 7:30pm CCT (9:00pm WST) Tuesday 23 December.
