WAITING LIST SEASON Posted this elsewhere, but it might be useful for others.. Its all to do with balancing the numbers for the University. Say there are 20 places. Theyll offer around 25 knowing that some will not take up the offer as the student have two or three offers. Some students wait till last minute to decide when all the offers are on the table in front of them. If in August the Uni are then are down to say 16 or 17 who have confirmed, they can draw from the reserve list (the good back ups) to get back to twenty. If its bursaries programme they are only getting money from the funding people for fixed numbers, if its not bursaries they take twenty sets of money from the students (about £8,500) and then get a further chunk from HEFCE to top up the costs (about £3,500). HEFCE will only give them a certain amount for a pre set number of students, so they dont need 2 extra students without the extra HEFCE funding. Hope that makes sense, its a nightmare for the admissions tutor. In addition the local ambulance trust may have a fixed number they are willing to support on clinical placements. If SCAS say 25 and the uni take on 40, they either have to double up the students on the ambulance or reject them. That would make a very poor experience for the student.
