WALKING AMONG THEM Veterans mark 75th anniversary of Bletchley Park at Annual Reunion Veterans flocked to mark the 75th anniversary of Bletchley Park at the annual reunion yesterday, by seeing how their World War Two workplace has been transformed. Many of the workers who broke enemy codes and ciphers, producing vital intelligence which helped shorten WW2 by an estimated two years, saving countless lives, were eager to visit as they had not seen it since the £8 million, Heritage Lottery Fund supported restoration was completed. In June HRH The Duchess of Cambridge visited to mark the restoration, meeting Veterans in the new Block C Visitor Centre, lovingly restored Codebreaking Huts 3 and 6 and the original Mansion surrounded by the now-reinstated parkland. Iain Standen, CEO of the Bletchley Park Trust, said “This year’s Reunion was busier than ever, reflecting that 2014 is a landmark year at Bletchley Park, with the completion of Phase One of the long-awaited restoration and the huge increase in visitor numbers which followed. It is a great honour for us to show what progress has been made in preserving the site for future generations to the people who did the job; the Veterans.” The Bletchley Park Trust is in a race against time to capture Veterans’ memories first hand in its Oral Archive project. If you know of anyone who worked at Bletchley Park or one of its outstations during WW2, please get in touch with Oral Archive Officer Jonathan Byrne, [email protected] 01908 640404. A special episode of the Bletchley Park Podcast, taking you inside the Veterans’ Reunion, will be on Audioboo’s Bletchley Park Channel from Wednesday 10 September. Image ©shaunarmstrong/mubsta
