WALKING IN THE SPIRIT - Galatians 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 1. Walking in the Spirit means To be moved (Ezek 36:27), guided/directed/ led (Rom 8:14) and controlled (Rom 8:9 NIV) by the Spirit (Tit 2:12). Walking naturally supernaturally - in the world but under guidance of the Holy Spirit - that in my daily life I no longer do what I want, desire, feel or think what is right to do. I no longer live out of my own strength and I do not depend on my own talents or personality. Through the Holy Spirit in me, I now do what He reveals to me (which is not good works, but hearing and doing what God says). - Philip Lichthaart. Chinhoyi. 14/1/96. Gal 2:20; Rom 8:14. 2. Why Must We Walk In The Spirit? a) We are under a new covenant (Heb 8:6; Jer 31:33, 34) • No longer life according to the letter, but by the indwelling Lord Jesus. • Everyone has a relationship with God, knows God and knows that God knows them. • The Holy Spirit not only shows us how to live, but He gives us the ability to do it (Phil 2:13; Jude24). b) God expects us to walk as Jesus did (1John 2:6) • Jesus was not a super-being who could not experience anything the way we do. He was a man like us because He gave up his Godly splendour (Phil 2:6). Yet He was also fully God! • Jesus was like us, but He walked in the Spirit. • Jesus only did what the Father told Him to do or what He has seen the Father do (John 5:19-20; 8:28,37,38; 14:10). • God gives us the will and ability to do His will (Phil 2:12b,13). c) The desires of the flesh will not be fulfilled (Gal 5:16-24) • Sin will not rule over you (Rom 8:1-11). • The Holy Spirit prevents you from continuing in sin. • Your desire to sin will decrease. • You will manifest the fruit of the Spirit. d) Walking in the Spirit brings freedom (Gal 5:1,18) • Bondage comes when we live without the Spirit (2Cor 3:17). • If you do what the Spirit tells you to do, you will not do dead works and you won’t do things to try and impress God (Eph 2:10). There is no condemnation if we walk in the Spirit (Rom 8:1; 5:1). • We must live in the Spirit to overcome condemnation - also from our own hearts (1John 3:20,21; 1 Cor 2:17). e) We will experience abundant life (John 10:10) • Anything not in Jesus will bring death, destruction and stealing. f) We experience lasting joy (John 15:11) 3. Principles Of Walking In The Spirit a) Forsake all (Luke 14:26, 27; 18:29; Luke 9:23) b) Become a child (Matt 18:3,4; Prov 3:5; Matt 11:25) c) Acknowledge Him in ALL your ways (Prov 3:6) d) Keep your thought life pure (Matt 5:8; Prov 4:23; 23:7; 2Cor 10:5; Phil 4:8) e) Capture the working of God in your heart (Matt 13:19; Prov 4:23) f) Renew your mind (Rom 12:2) g) Be filled with the Holy Spirit (Eph 5:18; Matt 3:11) 4. Hindrances To Walking In The Spirit a) An unforgiving spirit Mark 11:20-26 b) An unthankful spirit 2Tim 3:2 c) A bitter, resentful spirit Eph 4:30-32 d) A rebellious spirit 1Sam 15:23; Ps 107:11; [Ps 68:6] e) A spirit of heaviness, depression, fear, etc. 1Sam 16:14 f) A spirit of unbelief Heb 3:18-19; 1 John 5:10 g) A proud spirit James 4:6; Prov 3:34 5. How Do I Know The Voice Of God? Floyd McClung once said: "80% of God’s will for your life is revealed in the Scriptures." Therefore read the Word of God. Ps 119:105 - The Bible is God’s letter to you. 1John 2:27 Acts 21:4,11,12 But do not allow other people to become the Holy Spirit in your life!
