WALKING ODOR TAKES ON A WHOLE NEW MEANING :-) (FOR PEOPLE WHO DO NOSE WORK) This afternoon I met with two friends for a nose work practice session at the local fairgrounds. I had set up a container search in the back of an elevated covered stage with about 25 bags plus some small storage boxes with distractions (incl. one with a milkbone and one with a greenie). We all ran it with our dogs, and decided to rerun it again later, so we left the bags on stage. We then moved about 500 ft to an exterior area which one friend had set up. A young couple with a loose dog walked past, but we did not pay much attention. Suddenly one of my friends exclaims “those are your bags”! We stop the search and she says that the guy was carrying a big straw bag, that it looked very “unmanly”, and so she realized it it might be one of mine! So she runs to the stage, comes running back and shouts “all the bags are gone, except for the storage boxes”! So I pass my search dog over to my other friend, jump into her car with her dog in it, and race after these people. With screeching tires, I stop, get out and tell the guy (his girlfriend plus dog just kept on walking… hmmmm) in a very stern voice (with my lovely German accent - who is not afraid of that?!?) that those are my bags, and he says “oh, I thought the bags didnt belong to anybody”... REALLY??? I grab the bags from him (two full bags full of bags – aka matryoshka bags :-)) and drive back to my friends. Needless to say, our training session was over - we were dismayed and amused at the same time. Speechless even (me - imagine that!!!). I checked the bags, and a really nice backpack was missing - with odor in it! We returned to the stage, and found that the couple had also opened all of the storage boxes with the distractions. They had taken the milkbone and the greenie - not the old bread sticks and nuts though – great dog lovers, apparently… Only in Bloomsburg…. - “walking odor” has a different meaning in nose work! And I have friends who are “obedient to nose work bags (or she just smelled that something was foul)” :-). Silke P. S. It appears that all the bags have now been accounted for – will review the videos (another good reason to take videos of your training sessions :-))) to see if any are still missing… P.P. S. Watch your dog…. and your bags :-).
