WARNING - Rant coming! After a nice and relaxing staycation with the dogs I had the pleasure of day back to work. Naturally being the day after a long weekend we saw all sorts of things that maybe should have been seen sooner, but sometimes there arent the funds or the desire for emergency visits. This is NOT one of those cases. Got a call from someone wondering if they should bring in their dog - hasnt been well for a bit. Naturally the answer is yes, and of course he ends up coming in right before close (as they always do). Well hasnt been well is what you see in the photos. This poor dog is literally a skeleton with skin on top, and can barely support her own weight. She weighs probably half of what she should, smells horrid and is cold to the touch. We x-ray the dog, and low and behold there is something bright and shiny in her stomach. Hospitalization was likely beyond what would have been done for her, but requiring surgery puts her well over what her owner was prepared to do for her. Well as I looked at this poor dog whos clearly not known much in the way of care or love my heart just broke and I made what Jen calls a Heart decision, not necessarily a smart one, and had him surrender her. Introducing LILY, a very sweet 1YO Bulldog/Boxer. She is VERY VERY sick - he body is already showing signs of the early stages of shock. Shes all set up in my hospital cage, so she can be monitored through the night. Should she survive the night and gain some strength she will undergo surgery tomorrow to remove the object. Given how weak she is right now, she wont survive the anesthetic :( It will be a long road to recovery for her should the surgery be successful, as she will need major groceries to get her weight up, and plenty of followup to make sure she heads in the right direction. She can use all the positive thoughts and prayers you can spare. We are hopeful for a positive outcome, but know right now the odds are stacked against her. Lilly baby, you have a big family rooting for you - hang on and well try our best to make you right as rain!!
