WARNING : CONTRAFACTUAL Two Dates of note in the French Revelation (Freudian typo) On this day in Year III AR (Ante-Revolution, altho sometimes styled Ancient Regime) women of Paris marched to Versailles to confront Louis XVI of France about his refusal to promulgate the decrees on the abolition of feudalism, demand bread, and have the King and his court moved to Paris. More significant, on this day in Year II FR (French Republic, altho sometimes styled French Revolution) Christianity was disestablished in France. The following decrees slowly established the new cult in the form of a series of compromises, initially between the Girondins and the Jacobins The new cult as first established was a deistic dualism of two cults, the Jacobin Cult of the Supreme Being, understood as a Deistic noun, a Theistic verb, or a pantheistic gerund (your pref) and the cult of Reason, which had the commandments Know Thyself, Acquire learning thru study, observation, and work, Speak the truth, and Obey the law as embodied in the Social contract, even when a state official or the state tells you not to! accompanied by a political theory that could be called the republican mandate of heaven. When Danton, Talleyrand, and Fouche overthrew Robespierre on 28 July 1794, the stage was set. First the Protestant cults were readmitted, along with Jews, to the benefits of state support for the surviving juring priests of whatever persuasion. Under the Triumvirate (Prudently expanded into a Directory to include Carnot and Robespierres judas, St-Just) the Temples of reason were the first to become active under Talleyrand as the Minister of Religion, and Fouche as Minister of Police. Churches were converted into museums, and maintained as such, but, over time, genuine museums would be attached, or more commonly reading rooms, libraries, academies, gymnasia, etc, and the church itself was used for state funded lecture every fortieth day (attendance optional, although delivered by an agent of Fouches) The churches could also be rented to traditional theists, which initially meant Protestants or Jews who were members of legally constituted denominations. Next was the emergence of Republican Christianity or Rousseauanism, as it came to be called, a cult which accepted the revolution up to and including its calendar, but which added Rousseau to the rooster of Saints, as well as (due to sectaries and cultists for various motives) Clovis, Charlemagne, Jean DArc, and Henry IV, and even Voltaire and Diderot, were the Templars were called. This actually led the way to the settlement with the church, as, finally, the traditional theist denomination of Gallican Christianity emerged from Rousseauanism as a legally constituted cult, without Rousseau on the rooster, and Gallican Catholicism cult, centering on Jean DArc and observance services every seven days, emerged from that. Tho it took Bonapartes victories to enforce it, with what was aptly called the Cannonization of St Joan, and Catholics were admitted to the state church, although the Gallican Law made them every where employees of the state. But only a minority of French were willing to go to the inconvenience of defying the French calendar just for Church, especially with so many alternatives. Even Muslims who accepted the validity of the state were eligible.
