***WARNING: I WRITE THE FOLLOWING IN LOVE AND IN PEACE AND DO NOT WISH TO OFFEND ANYONE. IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO FACTUAL TRUTH THEN READ WITH CAUTION*** I was reading the news and obviously everyone knows about all the crazy civil unrest happening in the country and how people have been holding up signs saying no justice no peace (specifically in the Ferguson escalations). And a friend of mine posted, Well of course theres no peace, weve strayed from our Founding Fathers Christian design for this country. This country is suffering because of our straying from these principles. And I wanted to be sensitive, but I also wanted to be factual, especially when it comes to the difference between whether something is a believe of mine (or opinion) or indisputable fact. And while I wholeheartedly agree that there is an argument for believing that immorality may be on the rise (the extent is debatable), I do NOT believe that statements like the one made are based in factual truth. For one, we are not straying from the Founding Fathers Christian principles because this country was NOT founded upon Christianity. Now before most of my friend base goes up in arms about that statement, I assure you I am not basing this on opinion. I am merely just being factual and trying to keep my opinions out of it. So you want evidence huh? Ok, I have plenty. Lets start with what this country was founded upon, the Constitution, the law of the land for America, right? The constitution not once mentions God nor does it desire for there to be any association between religion or government. Dont believe me? Heres an excerpt: Congress shall make NO law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Thomas Jefferson called it a wall of separation between church and State. Some have also claimed that the date at the end of the Constitution is evidence of it having Christian roots. It states the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven. What they dont realize is that that is merely the English written transcription of Sept. 17, 1787AD. AD standing for the latin Anno Domini which literally translates into the Year of our Lord. What is most often sited for the reasoning behind why people assume this country was based upon Christianity is the Declaration of Independence. Not to borrow a line from the President, let me be clear, the Declaration of Independence is a historical document and holds absolutely no legal power of authority. The Declaration written mostly by Thomas Jefferson was a filing of grievance against the British government of the colonial intent to rebel against their rule. Only after the fact did a government become establish in the form of laws known as our Constitution. The Declaration, which states that Governments are instituted among men mentions the laws of Nature and of Natures God which hold true to Thomas Jeffersons religion, which was Deism, not Christianity. In fact, Jefferson rejected that Jesus was the Messiah and the incarnate son of God. Furthermore, the majority of the other Founding Fathers held true to the beliefs of Freemasonry. What further lends credence to the fact that the country was not founded on Christianity is the fact that our first President George Washington signed a legal document known as the Treaty of Tripoli to express the intent of the newly formed United States to remain a secular nation in foreign affairs. Article 11 reads As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Musselmen; and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries. Joel Barlow, Timothy Pickering, and John Adams all endorsed and ultimately ratified the treaty into law in 1797 clearly expressing the agreement of the Founding Fathers and the intentions for America. The reality here is that many are holding onto this idea that this is supposed to be a Christian nation. That is not a fact. And while the above mentioned individual feels as if there is no peace because of the countrys descent from Christian glory, the truth is, there is no peace because people like him keep holding onto something that is ultimately a lie. Only the truth shall set you free. Realize that we are all in this together, religious, non religious, black, white, foreign, and domestic in the bold pursuit of happiness. We will get no without a certain level of tolerance, understanding, and love in our hearts for peace. AND THATS THE TRUTH! I apologize if this seemed offensive to anyone. The intent was to educate and liberate. You know I love you all! XD Luis J. Hernandez
