WARNING: RANT AHEAD: Elevated TSH levels among California newborns after Fukushima: from Bobby1 at Optimalprediction. (*Note from RC: This data is very important. Although to me it is not surprising in the least, it still upsets me greatly - especially when we have to have Bobby1 hash this out for us because the medical community, the CDC, the NIH, AMA, and medical community at large has had their heads up their ass for the past 40 MONTHS . What other effects will we quantify in the future? Please share this info with your family physician. Whether they want to talk about this or not. I have found when approaching docs, not all but some, that not only can they are they disbelieving but its almost of they dont like a non-doc telling them something that they dont already know for themselves. Im not sure if its pride or ego...more likely they can not accept the ramifications of this if what you tell them is actually true. But that attitude isnt going to help their patients. Eventually, everyone is going to know how bad this accident was, and how bad it still is. But by then years have gone by where people could have been proactive had they been properly informed, had they educated themselves. I left the practice of a family doc who has taken care of me for 25 years, because he told me, after checking into the Fukushima accident in fall of 2011...You are right, but there is nothing you can do about this. He wanted to give me a script for valium, so I would calm the f*ck down. That wasnt a solution to me, and I refused it. Although some days, I wish I had that damn script. The same things you do to mitigate for rads help mitigate for many other toxins and substances in our environment. The radiation at low levels has been shown to affect organisms in profound ways. But when you start to add in other toxins, these effects are greatly enhanced...its called the MULTIPLIER EFFECT or synergy between rads and chems. This is more important than the radiation by itself. Docs know what the multiplier effect IS, so why cant they understand this basic concept? Its bad enough when the general population is in denial, but when the medical community is in denial as well, then it has to be scrapped. I am sick of fighting with docs about radiation. Recently I was told I needed a stat mammogram. When I expressed concern for radiating my breasts, the doc actually told me Its no different than radiation you would come across in nature. I said, Who told you that? Who teaches you guys this stuff? Are you aware that is how they give mice cancer to study them for breast cancer treatments?? That pissed her off, although its true. I insisted on Ultrasound...and she insisted on mammography plus ultrasound. She said she couldnt see what she needed to with utrasound alone. So I had both, and I regret it now. I asked for a thyroid collar and then dealt with passive-aggressiveness from the tech for the whole exam, because SHE was pissed I asked for a thyroid collar. The ultrasound ended up being the test that saw what was happening. So I radiated myself again - for nothing. And to to deal with what I consider incompetence from the doc on down, as well as shitty atitudes across the board...all because I asked the right questions. What the hell? Regardless of these experiences it wont stop me from handing out information like this when I go to the doc, and I have many now. But when I see that there is a MEASUREABLE effect from Fukushima in babies it makes me want to cry. What kind of world will these kids face as they grow up?? Its hard enough being a child, especially these days...but being a sick kid really, really sucks. End of rant :/ AND THANK YOU Rob Soltysik, for hashing this computationally intensive work out for us, since no one else has the guts to do so) While Mangano et al. created arbitrary classifications of hypothyroidism, which are not used in practice, these results reflect TSH levels before and after Fuku. TSH is implicated in many diseases, not just hypothyroidism. It affects the entire hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis. For one thing, increased TSH levels cause the newborn to absorb more iodine-131 than average TSH newborns would. This is also important because it involves the effect of all species of radioisotopes, I-131, Cs-137, Pu-239, etc. etc. We don’t know if only I-131 affects newborns, in fact Dr. Bandazhevsky has shown that Cs-137 affects thyroids too. The data have been split up into three seasons: 1. January 1 – March 16 2. March 17 – June 30 3. July 1 – December 31 It involves virtually the entire population of California newborns for the years 2009-2012. AFTERFUK is an indicator variable, which equals 1 if the birth was after Fukushima, and 0 otherwise. “IF 4.5 < TSH THEN AFTERFUK = 1 means than if TSH is greater than 4.5 (actually 4.99 in the original data), then the newborn is classified as being born after Fukushima. ODA uses maximum-accuracy classification – no model of this form achieves higher classification accuracy. No distributional assumptions are involved.
