Samfya/September 24, 2014 (ZANIS)…………………………………… A 17 year old girl of Maximo village of Chief Kasoma bangweulu in Samfya district in Luapula Province has put to bed to a deformed baby girl and has brought about a lot of concerns by the public in the District. The baby and the mother have currently been admitted at Samfya District Hospital though the baby is in a critical condition which Doctor Felix Simute described to be a 50/50 situation. Speaking to ZANIS in an interview at Samfya District Hospital the Mother whose name has been withheld for security purposes has since asked for help from any well wishers who are capable of lending out a hand so that the child’s health is sustained. A baby girl who weighed about 2.6kg was delivered at home in Maximo Village on 22nd of September 2014 was taken to the hospital on the 23rd by the mother upon observing that the baby was abnormal. And Doctor Simute who was on duty this morning disclosed the incident to ZANIS in Samfya at the District Hospital that the baby was born with congenital malformation illness, which he explained saying causes may be many but in this case from the tests that were done it may be suspected Syphilis which the mother had by the time she was pregnant. The Doctor revealed that there are a lot of pregnant women who do not seek medical advice when they are pregnant especially in rural areas. Dr. Simute explained saying the baby has deformed hands and feet, cracked skin and other deformations saying that the baby is a high risk. Doctor Simute said because of the cracked skin the baby is likely to have infections and the chances of surviving are less. He said the only help that the Hospital can offer is by giving some Anti biotic to the baby and also give the baby some necessary fluids to sustain its life.
