WCHE NEWS - Students in the Great Valley School District will have a new math curriculum this year. According to Tricia Beck, the elementary supervisor of teaching and learning, the new curriculum is based on the Singapore math program, which incorporates pictures and symbols. The idea is for students to use the pictures to understand the how and why behind the math before using numbers and standard math symbols. The new curriculum is called Math in Focus, which Beck says will better align the district with Pennsylvania Common Core Standards. Because Common Core Standards intensify the rigor of a curriculum, the district is removing some content so that teachers can provide more in-depth instruction of a subject as opposed to covering a wider range of information. The Great Valley School District is hosting an informational webinar today at 1:00 p.m. for parents to learn more about the curriculum and ask questions. The district is also hosting an Elementary Math Parent Night on August 21st at 7:00 p.m. to provide an overview of Math in Focus. Parents must RSVP by going to the school district’s website at gvsd.org and completing a survey. Information on how to access the webinar and venue location for the Parent Night will then be emailed.
