WE ARE ALL SILVIO by Bebbe Severgnini, today on the International New York Times ...On he other hand, it is true that every italian is a bit like Silvio. Mr. Berlusconi embodies some of he best, and many of be worst, features of the Italian character. He has a few of our virtues and all of our vices. He is intuitive, easygoing and often very funny. He knows his football, enjoys good food, and appreciates romantic songs and dinners. He loves lavish homes, hates rules, tells homes and uses the odd swear word. He knows how to make money and has no shame about cutting corners in the process. He cares about his friends (as long as they do what he says), talks fondly about his mamma and adores his kids. In fact, he loves families so much that hes had three of them already, plus a selection of lady friends on his side. Mr. Berlusconi isnt just a reflection of the italian character, but a warning for the nation. He is there to remind us what happens to talent, without discipline, to enthusiasm without ethics and to stamina without self-control. And this is our problem. Our former Prime Minister has been appaling, but that doesnt bother him, and it doesnt bother many Italians. Instead of patting ourselves on the back for getting rid of him, we should be asking why it took us so long to do so. ....
