WE REMEMBER Jason Payor remembers- That morning I had come - TopicsExpress

WE REMEMBER Jason Payor remembers- That morning I had come off of an overnight shift at Wawa in Hillsborough, NJ and driven to my Grandparent’s house in South river so that I can help clean out their garage and do the yard. I had dozed off in a chair in their basement watching a movie and was woken by my grandmother after the first plane hit. I remember telling her that it was just a movie and that I’d be up in a little. When it hit me that it was the news and not a movie the first thing that popped in my head was that my dad had just recently stopped working in the office down the block from there. After the second plane hit I called my New Jersey National Guard unit in Morristown, it took about 2 hours to get through because everyone was on the phones at the same time. By the time I had gotten through I was told that New York had closed its borders and to stand by in case we were needed for anything. December of that year we were conducting guard duty on the New Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge. As part of our duty brief we were told that under no circumstances were we to step off of the far side of the bridge during our roving patrols. We were able to set up visits to the small memorial site when we were off duty and I remember feeling so many mixed emotions as we climbed back in the vehicles to head back to New Jersey.
