WEEKEND THOUGHT OF THE DAY BY UMARU JALLOH. 2007 was the year of the APC and the young generation born in the 60s and 70s were yawning for a change of leadership. The scope of that revolution did not remain confined to the boundaries of the north only, but the revolutionary tide soon swept to other parts of the country, and the whole of Sierra Leone was engulfed by its waves. The people of Sierra Leone were greatly excited and they were prepared to sacrifice themselves in order to get their political rights and to uproot the autocracy of the existing rulers of the SPP. We learnt that Political leaders achieve success when the feelings of liberty, equality and fraternity seemed to be powerful and the traditions, policies, institutions and the political ideas of the medieval age are replaced by the new revolutionary principles, institutions and tradition. The APC party has come a long way with few revolutionary fighters engulfed with struggle, political fragmentation within its rank and file. For the APC and it leadership these are hard times. It is a test of leadership and not a time for political division. Lack of the spirit of unity within the APC leadership leads the country nowhere, but creates a political recipe to the demise of the party. Any selfish and greedy intention created within the APC rank and file will result to the political burial of the APC party. This is the time APC must yawn for a breath of fresh air for unity within the political leadership. The APC undoubtedly achieved its aim but this success would not continue for long, if we fail to unite on the question of the party’s future. Consequently, our opponent will take advantage of this weakness and make use of our political failures. Late President Kabba had his own problems during the rebel war, but the SLPP party leadership and supporters stood behind him. This is what is expected from the APC. As a political party people expect cabinet ministers and some of the party stalwarts to make some sacrifice while the country is bleeding. The people of Sierra Leone expect APC to stand the heat in the kitchen and not to stand aloof watching the present situation as bystanders or spectators. Sierra Leoneans do expect that spirit of cooperation. The spirit of active cooperation among its leaders serves as helping hands in the struggle to fight Ebola. This is the time APC should avoid the political feelings of mutual distrust among themselves. Mutual distrust between party members, indifferent leadership is contributory factor for leadership failure. APC members do not underestimate your opponents; unity within the party is medicinal to the sustenance of the party’s future success.
