WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL & ENCOURAGEMENT. Within the story of God where we are told of nations, wars, countless deaths, destruction, evil and the crumbling faithfulness of Gods chosen nation; we find the small, humble and personal story of Ruth. From Bethlehem which means place of bread, we see irony in a family of four fleeing from famine. This story begins with loss and the bleak future of a woman and her two foreign daughter-in-laws. The loving, selfless and humble heart of Ruth is the heart of God. This woman is a stereotype of Jesus first teaching on the mountain (Matthew 5); blessed are the spiritually poor, those who mourn, the meek and gentle. In her faithfulness God blesses Ruth; a gentile woman who became the mother of a family that God uses to change the world, the line of David, the line of Jesus Christ. 1) Firstly we see a God who is as concerned with the individual in and amongst the chaos of the nations. In the story of towns, cities and nations God is in love and pursuing YOU. 2) Secondly we see the preparations for the saviour of the world here in this small and quiet book in the Old Testament. We are as humbly introduced to Jesus in scripture as humbly as he came into the world. REJOICE IN GOD IN WONDER AND AWE TODAY. HE NEVER CHANGES, YET THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING NEW TO DISCOVER ABOUT HIS GREATNESS. Fraser.
