WEEKLY FISHING REPORT- Reports were sporadic this past week due to weather conditions. However, Howard Rippalone, Steve Shelton, and Steves son Brian had a decent blackfish bite inside the bay on Sunday. The trio revisited a few back-bay hotspots that have always produced some nice Tog around this time of year. They chose an outgoing tide to drift green crabs over some holes around Hecksher State Park instead of anchoring. Steve scored top fish with a 5.22 lb. blackfish and limited out in about two hours. Howard managed 2 respectable blackfish of 18 and 19 and Brian added three fish up to 18 to the cooler. On Tuesday, myself, Dan the Man Jorgensen, Russell Gianotti, and Jeff Train Wreck Collins tried our luck at the Riverview Striped Bass Tournament sponsored by Lessings, Inc. and The Fisherman Magazine. We fished hammered Diamond Jigs and Cod Jigs with plain hooks, then trolled a little. I landed a 23.5lb. Bass taking 14th place. Dan and Jeff each landed quality fish that contributed to the Calcutta win as well. My friend Boyd Riedell and his wife Sabrina also gave it a shot at The Riverview. For his third consecutive year Boyd qualified and nailed down 10th place with a Striper of 25lbs. On Wednesday, Tim Lee and his brother-in-law worked the Robert Moses Bridge area for some Striper action. Tim noted that it was a short bite that only lasted 30 minutes after the tide changed. The guys had several quality bass up to 42 using Bass Assassins with 2oz. jigheads. On Saturday, Dan Jorgensen, Jeff Collins and Iron Mike Robinson anchored up on the Fire Island Reef despite heavy winds. Dan reported an immediate bite as soon they got settled, but the rough seas forced the anchor free after 2 hours of fishing. They made it back early with a nice 5.8lb. blackfish and 7 other keepers, all between 3-4lbs. Whole green crabs and fresh skimmer clams were the preferred bait resulting in over 20 blackfish total. Steady news of cocktail size blues and the occasional weakfish have still been trickling in from local dock fishermen. In order to get out fishing throughout the week, many of our usual boating fishermen had opted to fish on the Captree party boats instead. Most guys stated that the best bite is happening on the morning trips.
