WELCOME NOTE FROM THE PATRON PM I am delighted to present to you this brief message about The United Kenya Youth Foundation. The “Visioning” process for the Foundation began in my mind, appropriately, with the sounds of desperation from needy youth in different parts of Kenya and the region. My upbringing in humble background, and my long experience in my fellow young people life, gave me first hand experience of the ravages of desperation among the youth.Our historical records and early development plans defined the war against poverty, ignorance and disease as the elemental trigger points in our search for dignified and wholesome living.The three social ill remain important reference points in the search for answers to how best to promote peaceful co-existence among all people while alleviating the human suffering. During the formation of the Foundation opinions were sought from representatives of youth, philosophers, intellectuals, activists, students, international agencies and business persons to wrangle with the notion of efficiency and effectiveness in the addressing the main objectives of the Foundation that remain: poverty reduction, strengthening of democratic values, support to health care/facilities, peace & reconciliation, support for youth development initiatives, support for education, and support for the preservation of culture. The consensus arising from these consultations was that the Foundation needed to be guided by values such as respect for communities, professionalism, and transparency. In this regard the Foundation instituted a Board of Management, appointed an executive management team comprising professionals, set up a system of consulting with all youth from different communities and vetting applications for support, incorporated partners and well wishers in decision making and instituted a system of accountable and transparent operations.This is through appointment of 47 coordinators from all the 47 counties and representatives of the foundation from each and every constituency(all these people are volunteers). Even though the Foundation has faced considerable operational difficulties such as inadequate funding and slow phase in building partnerships and strategic alliances, it has achieved a number of successes in the pursuance of its objectives.The Foundation has, through a consultative process, identified projects that will be pursued during the next five years. These projects, all aimed at contributing to a stable and peaceful youth constituency, include various environmental conservation projects, health projects, peace and conflict resolution projects, rural development projects, and education projects. In order to enable the Foundation to undertake the projects, it will be necessary to raise necessary funds. On behalf of the Foundation, I wish to call upon our partners to continue supporting us. Our financial records and plans will be easily accessible and do provide a good picture of how we have utilized funds. We have operated in a transparent manner and are committed to a professional management system that will ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the business of the Foundation. Finally, I wish to extend our sincere gratitude to all our partners, friends and well-wishers for their continued and loyal support to the Foundation and for their continued confidence in the Foundation as it embarks on the implementation phase of planned projects.
