WELCOME TO NIGERIA. Having just disembarked from a British - TopicsExpress

WELCOME TO NIGERIA. Having just disembarked from a British Airways flight from London, along with other passengers, I was waiting to pick up my luggage in baggage claim. Suddenly, the sound of a slap echoed in the air. A sharply dressed man in his 40s had just slapped another man with a similar profile. Why? The slapper claimed the slappee had pushed him. To which my fellow passengers verbally pounced on the slapper who indignantly asked if they knew who he was. Meanwhile the slappee had positioned himself behind the slapper and before you could say Boko Haram, had delivered two retaliatory slaps on the slappers face. What the slapper did not realise was that the slappee was an Army General. However, as soon as he became aware of his transgression (not the slap but the rank of the slappee), he started begging for forgiveness profusely. The General berated him and for all intents and purposes, all was soon forgiven. I thought to myself, that ended rather quickly and amicably. I wish. As the slapper exited the airport, walking a few steps behind, I was tempted to tell him that people like him were one of the reasons Nigeria sometimes seemed to be dysfunctional. Something told me to mind my business. Im glad I did. Waiting for the slapper outside was a welcoming party of gun toting soldiers who told him to step aside and quickly maneuvered him into a corner. I hate to imagine the gruelling ordeal the slapper is being put through by his captors. Just another reminder of the many pleasant and unpleasant surprises Nigeria has a way of presenting on a daily basis! Lets give peace a chance!
