WERE THE 120 SPEAKING HEAVENLY TONGUES OR FOREIGN - TopicsExpress

WERE THE 120 SPEAKING HEAVENLY TONGUES OR FOREIGN LANGUAGES? When the 120 filled and overwhelmed with the Spirit came down from the Upper Room into the streets of Jerusalem, a crowd of thousands was already running in their direction because of the sound they heard. Jews had packed out Jerusalem from all over the known world to celebrate the Feast. As the 120 were now in the street speaking in other tongues by the Spirit, thousands heard them speaking in their own languages declaring the wonders of God. But others only heard babbling or jibberish and said the disciples were drunk. When Peter addresses the crowd he says that they are not drunk like you think - its only 9am and the bars arent even up yet. He then proclaims to them that this is the fulfillment of Joels prophecy from 700 years earlier. Many Bible commentators who are not Spirit-filled will say the disciples were speaking by the Spirit in the foreign languages of those present. But that is not possible. If the 120 were all speaking at least 15 different languages at the same time, how could a crowd of thousands even be able to distinguish what they were saying? No, the 120 were speaking a heavenly language - they were speaking by the Spirit in other tongues, and those among the thousands whose hearts were open - the remnant, received the interpretation of the tongues in their own language. Those whose hearts were hardened and closed only heard babbling and jibberish and said they were drunk. Speaking in other tongues is still for the church today. It has not ceased. And it is still a blessing for our spiritual lives individually and corporately.
