WHAT ABOUT ACCOUNTABILITY? In any other sphere of life, the disastrous result of an unpopular5, misguided, heavy-handed and bullying programme like the zero tolerance to the 100km/h speed limit would see people being asked for some level of accountability. The major problem with such a narrow focus, as we have on speed and drink driving is that the vast majority of drivers firmly believe that they never drink and drive or drive fast and therefore they are not involved. This holiday period has been absolutely terrible. 17 people dead and police saying that at least eight of those probably involved drink or speed. Thats less than 50%. What about the others? Dave Cliff has long been a hard-nosed policeman who makes no secret of the fact he believes in a punitive and heavy-handed approach to road safety and applies himself zealously to the task. In the past day, I have heard nothing from Mister Cliff except reinforcing the failed message. He needs to be held accountable for lulling the vast majority of New Zealanders into believing the road safety message doesnt apply to them because they dont drink, drive and speed. Ad where is the Police Minister in all of this? He too needs to show responsibility and accountability. His name is Michael Woodhouse. I think . . .
