WHAT ABSURDITY! When on leave sometimes back, I asked a number of kids why many people in Vihiga County are poor and they had this to say; Annet a std. 8 pupil told me they are poor because her parents didn’t receive good education to warrant a good job like being a teacher or a doctor. Because of this reason, none of her siblings have gone beyond class 8. When they are at home, they complement their parent’s meager incomes by doing manual jobs but still the proceeds do not guarantee satisfaction of life. Annet does not think of having a better future one day neither. I got many stories of such kind that could fill pages and pages of a book and when I summarize and sum up what I was told, I conclude that our people are poor as a result of four things namely; poor representation, unequal distribution of national resources, lack of basic education and manpower training to mobilize resources for rapid economic growth. Therefore, we need leaders who could come up with policies that could increase our literary populations in primary, secondary, middle level colleges and universities. We also need leaders who could increase our productive sectors of the economy so that when children finish school, they can be able to secure employment. It is not correct for our county to rely on distribution of wealth alone as the governor is currently doing without absolute creation of same wealth through various means such as enabling people to get bank loans and grants at concessionary rates respectively. Good economic development is based on creation of standing wealth such as good infrastructure in terms of roads, health facilities, equipped schools, etc. It is unfortunate to hear that the Vihiga County MCA’s are each given sh.10M [free money] meant for development of wards yet it is turned to personal use in the name of sheltering the governor from impeachment. Today, they are using same cash to construct maissonettes in their homes at the expense of development projects. It is also speculated that county government is unable to pay electricity and water bills for Mbale Hospital. If this rumor is true, I am kindly requesting the senator Hon. George Khaniri and MP Hon. Yusuf Chanzu to investigate the matter and call for a meeting of stakeholders [the community, politicians and opinion leaders] to discuss this anomaly and bring sanity to the county. We need to thoroughly investigate all MCA’s source of incomes especially their donations to funerals and church harambees on top of huge developments they are undertaking in their homes within a short period of time prior to their appointment.
