WHAT ARE YOU SELLING? I recently researched a company on the Internet that I considered doing business with. I found a company-sponsored site on Google with a brief description of the company and some reviews. The first sentence was short and explained a common misconception about the company. This seemingly insignificant statement was followed by 4-5, sentences explaining why they were unique and offered an excellent service. I decided to try them out and at first I was happy. After a while I had a negative experience with them and began to question whether the common misconception they informed me about was true or not. As I reflected on this circumstance I wondered how I would have reacted to the negative experience if I had never known about the common misconception. Just like the brief description of this company, what we fear or don’t want people to think about us often plays a role in how we represent ourselves to the world. How do you sell yourself? Even if your intention is to communicate that you’re the greatest thing since sliced bread, you must authentically believe in your greatness or you will plant seeds of doubt through your words and your actions. When someone compliments you, do you accept the compliment? Do you make excuses when you make a mistake? Do you devalue your strengths, talents, and abilities? If you don’t genuinely sell your greatness, who is going to buy it?
