"WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE GOOD" "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit." (Matthew 12:33) "This is so good," we say, when we eat a bowl of fresh, sweet strawberries. Or we think, "Those apples are sure to make a great pie." Our mouths begin to water at the very thought of such goodness. When we think of goodness in terms of the fruit of the Spirit, however, we might think of people who enrich our lives or who make us feel good by just being around them. We think of those who offer us encouragement or the hand of fellowship. We like to be around those people we think of as good. They make us want to be better people. We would also like to think that most people intend to be good. We can debate that issue until the apple pie burns, but we know for certain that God is good and wants us to be good too.
