WHAT DOES MIN WAGE, REALLY BUY US? I think we can all agree - TopicsExpress

WHAT DOES MIN WAGE, REALLY BUY US? I think we can all agree that the minimum wage in this country is a shambolic affair, within our industry we can have people who work in excess of sixty hours a week and still have to claim government benefits to live! People who are routinely work weeks in a row without a day off, just to cover the basic of bills. But I believe the min wage culture has wider implications for our industry. For one we seem to be in the grip of a security company explosion, these days every one and their mum is starting a security company, this in turn has driven down wages to near rock bottom as well as standards. I’ve even seen people on the Facebooks groups asking the question” what do I need to start a company” bottom line is if you need to ask that question you should not start one! However I often wonder if peoples new found lust for entrepreneurism is fuelled by the fact that no matter how hard some people work or how much effort they put in they still only going to do long ours for crap pay UNLESS THEY BECOME THE BOSS. Would these people be so quick to start up if they had a decent salary and prospects? In my main job most officers have been here eight years plus which in no small part can be due to the 30k a year pay check! I believe that the low wages are also having an effect on the standard of training companies that are setting up. We really have a strange two tier system at the moment were if you earn good money then you can afford to pay for great training with the top companies, after all no one can argue that in most cases you do get what you pay for. That said if you are on job seekers often you get training for northing, perhaps not the best but training none the less. On the other hand if you are struggling to make ends meet on nmw, then you have to go with the cheapest provider you can if of course you go with one at all. I believe a lot of the fly by night TP’s that pop up offering cheap as chips training know this and use it to their full advantage. There needs to be a radical change in the way we pay and treat our staff in this industry, surly a living wage can only be the way forward? On the Brightside I have been approached by some TP’s offering the group some great discounts on courses, some of these are charity’s that want to help the industry others are tp’s that have offered to help as a way of giving something back to our members . I hope to roll these out over the next few months, KIP!
