WHAT HAS CHANGED, AFTER 24TH DECEMBER 1989? I am very meditative today: Why did we fight a bloody civil war in Liberia in the first? Was it because we were ignorant? Was it because the so-called world power wanted regime change in Liberia for foreign policy control and national resources exploitation, in her interest? Was it because a few greedy and power-hungry Liberians sponsored the December 24, 1989 incursion, just as they did in 1985, for personal gains, most unrelatedly to the general Liberian interests? Was it because past governments failed to provide basic public and social services – roads, schools, electricity, water, hospitals and clinics, government’s owned/built ministries, etc? Was it because past governments were corrupt? Was it because past governments were sectionalistic? Was it because past governments were tribalistic? Was it because past governments were nepotistic and consumed in cronyism? Was it because of bad governance? What was it? I am reflecting, very penetratingly, and the following question keeps popping in my head: What has changed, even after we killed over 230, 000 of our own people and halted development and destroyed our education system and the future of hundreds and thousands of young Liberians who could have today become doctors and engineers and teachers and agriculturists and nurses among others; but who, on the contrary, are wallowing in poverty (some without limbs or basic education) and are liability first to their parents and second to a government that has turned her back on them? What has changed, Liberians? I am searching for answers!
