WHAT IF…? The following is a scenario for you to consider, especially if you have never needed to give serious thought as to where your food and the fiber for your clothing and soft furnishing comes from. Opening Scene: A group of nicely dressed people, mixed ages, male and female from various walks of life, are sitting down to a special dinner. Wine and other drinks. Beautifully cooked and presented food. Elegant table linen, flowers. “This looks nice,” they say as they pick up their knives and forks. Hang on a minute, do you ever think much about the importance of farmers and graziers and wonder where that food comes from? “Not really,” Well, let us do a little exercise that might show you a few things before you start on your dinner. All that food in front of you was produced by farmers or fishermen (who farm the ocean) Zap – all food vanishes. “Oh! Well, at least we can have a drink.” No you can’t because all the fruits, grains, hops, sugar etc used to make those drinks were grown on farms. Zap – all drinks vanish. Looking offended everyone stands up and prepares to leave. Please stand still for a moment as we haven’t finished yet. All natural fibres such as cotton, wool, silk and the like, plus the leather of your shoes, belts, handbags etc were all produced as raw materials on farms. Zap – their clothes disappear, as does the table linen, curtains and other soft furnishings. In the name of decency, we hand out some green plastic rubbish bags to cover some pretty awful sights Oh, and the flowers came from a local flower farm. Zap – they’re gone. Wood used in the furniture was farmed in a plantation. Zap again and no furniture. That should be about enough to get across the fact that, without the rural industries we are all in trouble. And, even if those necessities are imported, they were still grown by farmers somewhere! Please think!
