WHAT IS INCREASED FETAL MOVEMENT? A baby’s movements will gradually increase week by week until 32 weeks when they will plateau but not reduce. The increase should be gradual, if you notice a sudden spell of erratic increased movement you should speak to your midwife. WHAT CAUSES MY BABY TO MOVE MORE? Your baby may have regular spells each day when they increase their movements. This is usually in the early evening and may be part of your baby’s regular routine. Increased fetal movement is not considered as much of an issue as decreased fetal movement as usually increased fetal movement caused by acute fetal distress is followed by a spell of reduced fetal movement. However in some cases a sudden increase in movement may be the only warning sign of fetal distress. It is important to report any change in your baby’s movements, even if this is a sudden spell of increased movement that is not followed by a spell of reduced fetal movement. Imagine your baby lying in a cot, if they started making lots of sudden, sharp, jerky movements you would most likely seek medical help. Likewise if they were making slow lethargic movements you would be concerned. Do the same with a baby in the womb and contact your midwife or healthcare professional if you notice any change to your baby’s regular pattern of movement. POSSIBLE CAUSES OF INCREASED FETAL MOVEMENT … High intake of caffeine or sugar: A sudden surge of caffeine or sugar, as well as some medication may cause your baby to have a brief spell of increased movement. Fetal Hypoxia (Reduced flow of Oxygen to the baby): Increased fetal movement can be a sign of fetal hypoxia – the baby may have a sudden surge in movements which will eventually lead to a reduction in movement if the hypoxia persists. Cord Accidents: In cord accidents, the baby may react by suddenly increasing movements. The mother may therefore experience uncharacteristic vigorous fetal activity. Report any change in your baby’s regular pattern of movement to your midwife for further assessment #savinglittlelives
