WHAT OUR RETIRED GENERALS NEED TO LEARN Lt Col CR Sundar, President Tamil Nadu BJP ExServicemens’ Cell It is a momentous time for us ExServicemen (ESM). But I am afraid our retired generals are squandering their opportunities since they don’t seem to know enough about life. For close to five years now I have advocated that we ESM should shed the veneer of being apolitical and take to directly involving ourselves in politics. In view of their nationalistic outlook, candour, integrity of showing equal concern to all religions and their unfailing support for the Indian Armed Forces I have been recommending that veterans patronize Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). I myself joined BJP in 2011 and have been the President of Tamil Nadu State BJP ESM Cell. At long last I am happy to note that leading lights among ESM in Northern India have now seen it fit to associate themselves with BJP. On 15 September 2013 we saw the satisfactory spectacle of retired Generals VK Singh, Raj Kadyan and Satbir Singh address ESM from a BJP platform at Rewari. The occasion itself was historically significant. It was the first campaign speech of Shri Narendra Modi after he was officially anointed as the prime ministerial candidate of BJP. At last India has a leader that we deserve. For his part he is ready to take into consideration every type of request from the veterans’ side. However, my humble submission is that our Generals are not yet far sighted enough. They do not know what to bid. Monetary benefit is not everything. We have to pitch higher than that. For years I have been advocating that BJP ESM should be made to stand as candidates in elections to the local bodies. We need to build our grass root strength. I would like BJP ESM to be nominated as candidates and go on to become Ward Councillors and Chairmen in Village Panchayats, Town Panchayats, Municipalities and Corporations (where they can become Mayors too). Lawmakers such as MLAs and MPs don’t just happen. Today’s councillor is tomorrow’s MLA. Today’s MLA is tomorrow’s MP. Only if we cultivate the grass root today can we have enough lawmakers to be able to change the laws where required and better enforce those that are existing. Actually it appears that our retired Generals are not smart enough to comprehend the possibilities. Never mind, we in the BJP ESM Cell are working towards that very aim: to develop the party’s grass root strength with ESM Lt Col (Retd.)
