WHAT WE LEARNED.... A new era dawns for Steven Gerrard It wasn’t quite how the Liverpool skipper would have wanted to celebrate the 16th anniversary of his debut for the club. Steven Gerrard hasn’t spent much time on the subs’ bench in his glittering Anfield career. But the result at least gave him something to smile about as the final whistle sounded, even though he had spent just 15 minutes on the pitch. It was the first time Gerrard hadn’t started a Premier League game since the visit of Hull City on New Year’s Day, when he was ruled out by injury. Gerrard’s name has been one of the first to appear on the teamsheets of every Liverpool manager to have served the club in the last 16 years. But Brendan Rodgers’ recent admission that his skipper can’t play three games in a week to the level he’d like was the signal of a new era for him. At the age of 34, and with Liverpool involved in European competition again, there will be times when Gerrard is given a rest, as he was for the game against Real Madrid. It is something he will need to get used to, a policy which has won support from his old Anfield teammate Jamie Carragher, among others. If it prolongs the legendary midfielder’s career, then the odd bit of bench duty must be seen as a positive move.
