WHEN DID WW1 START? It is interesting that in many countries the 28th of July 1914 is seen as the start of WW1. In Australia, the start date is seen as being the 4th of August 1914 as this is the date that Britain joined the war. We think that the 4th August is more accurate because when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on the 28th of July it was still a local war between two countries. It took Russian mobilisation, German declaration of war on Russia and France and British declaration of war on Germany to make it a global war (as they all had empires).
