WHEN I WAS IN UNIBEN, I stayed in the school hostel throughout my stay, and my bunk-mate in 200L taught me one of lifes lesson. He was a free guy, with no cares in this world; overly carefree is what I will call him. He eats and scatters used plates with left-overs on our table. He throws shirts, shoes and most of his belongings anywhere and everywhere. When he invites his friends over, they scatter my bedspread and leave it that way. It got to the extent that anytime I am returning from church, I lose all the joy and happiness I got from the service on seeing how scattered and unkempt my corner is. I called him and tried to playfully admonished him, all to no avail. So what will I do? Will I continue to be down because of this? NOPE. I sat my mind, soul and spirit down one day and we had a good discussion. I told myself that I will have to accept him that way, that is, never expecting any change of attitude from him. Thus, whenever I am coming from church or class, I always prepare my mind for the worst. I prepare myself mentally for anything. And whenever I reach my room and my fears are confimed, rather than get sad, most often I just smile and set the place in order. I mean, nothing has changed, he still scatters the space we shared the same way he has always been doing. However, I smile now, instead of the former disappointment and sadness I felt before. Thus I learnt, You want to live a happy life? Lower your expectation. Dont expect too much from people and events you know may not turn out well. Dont hang all your hopes on a single man or event. Two men were give 10 naira, one was sad while the other was happy, very happy. Why? The sad man was expecting more while the happy man was expecting less. HAPPINESS IS A STATE OF MIND. -#VJW
