Proven Gold Reserves Hit 340 Tons Iran’s proven gold reserves have reached 340 tons, said the head of Iran’s Geology and Mineral Exploration Organization. Mohammad Taqi Korehi added that the country seeks to achieve an annual output of 5 tons by the end of the Fifth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2015). Pointing to the annual production of 2,700 tons of gold worldwide, he said Iran should produce at least 1 percent of the aforesaid figure—equivalent to 27 tons. Korehi noted that the country’s proven mineral reserves stand at 60 billion tons. “Mineral extraction reached 391 million tons in the last Iranian year (ended March 20, 2013),” he said. “The current year budget for the Geology Organization’s projects is 530 billion rials,” he said. Korehi announced that lithium—which is a rare mineral—has been discovered in water combined with extracted oil. “National Iranian Oil Company seeks to extract lithium from these waters,” he concluded.
