WHO WEARS MASKS THESE DAYS? At first glance it seems like the answer is ‘no one’, but if you think about it a bit more, you may be able to come up with quite a list! Masks are still very much part of our culture – whether it is in music with bands like Slipknot or Buckethead, or theatre such as Cirque du Soleil or the Phantom of the Opera. There are many masked heroes such as Batman, Spiderman, Captain America, the Power Rangers and even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and half the cast of Kick-Ass! (imdb/title/tt1250777/) For every masked hero there is a masked villain such as Catwoman, Darth Vader, Hannibal Lechter and the ubiquitous ‘ghost face’ from the Scream movies. (By the way, does anyone feel the same about hockey masks since Jason Voorhees in the Friday13th Movies?) What are the masks doing for these characters? Do they make them more scary, more relate-able, more like us? My guess is that they are actually less human because of the masks – and can be either more intensely good or intensely bad because of that. Either way it can all be great fun. If you want to have some fun playing with the idea of masks there are still a few places left in the October and November Marvellous Mask Workshops.
