WHO to certify South-East Asia polio-free today The World Health Organization (WHO) will certify South-East Asia, comprising 11 countries—Bangladesh, Bhutan, North Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor-Leste—as polio-free on Thursday. For such certification, all countries in a particular region need to have a three-year track record without a single case of wild polio, or polio that occurs naturally. India completed three years without a case of wild polio on 13 January, marking a public health success for the country; the last case was detected in West Bengal in 2011. photo Although the region will be declared polio-free, challenges still remain, experts said.
