WHY AFRICAN CONTINENT NEEDS THE INTERNATIONAL BOXING FEDERATION (IBF) TO CONTINUE MENTORING ITS BOXING FRATERNITY Think Africa! Think IBF! DAR ES SALAAM (TANZANIA) DUBAI (UAE), SATURDAY, 28, 2014 –The International Boxing Federation Africa (IBF/Africa) was established in 1999 when a team of Africa boxing stakeholders found it necessary to have one of the major sanction bodies in African continent to spearhead the “Progression Path” of African boxers after their amateur boxing career into the lucrative professional boxing industry. Before the establishment of IBF/Africa a handful of African boxers managed to penetrate the international boxing industry which made it difficult for thousand boxers to earn substantial earnings through a paid rank boxing. It was under such difficult boxing climate that African boxing stakeholders met in various geographical locations and decided to link with a reputable boxing organization that would safeguard and promote the aspirations of African boxers internationally. The task was gigantic but, IBF/Africa set to face these challenges in a humble and dignified manner. Onesmo Ngowi of Tanzania the former paid ranked Jr. Featherweight boxer and the President of Tanzania Professional Boxing Commission was given the task to communicate with the IBF. Mr. Ngowi traveled (as a member of H.E. President B.W. Mkapa’s delegation that visited in USA in 1999) to the IBF/USBA headquarters in New Jersey, USA to meet and discuss with the President of IBF/USBA Hon. Robert Lee Sr. Their discussions centered on how to uplift the talents, image and profile of African boxers within the International Boxing Federation and United States Boxing Association (IBF/USBA). The result was swift as the International Boxing Federation Africa (IBF/Africa) was established in 1999 in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania and officially unveiled by then IBF/USBA President, Hiawatha G. Knight during her official African visit in 2000. This was renaissance of African boxing industry and immediate results were the sanctioned of the initial boxing tournament which saw six East African boxers vying for thee IBF Continental African Titles respectively. In that initial IBF/Africa tournament, boxer Magoma Shaban of Tanzania (deceased) won the first ever IBF Continental Africa Flyweight Title against boxer Joseph Waweru of Kenya. Mambea Bakari of Tanzania won the first ever IBF Continental Africa Welterweight title against Bob Obala of Kenya. Maneno Oswald of Tanzania won the first ever IBF Continental Africa Jr. Middleweight Title against Mohammed Orungi of Kenya. The initial three IBF Continental Africa titles were the nerve center for many IBF Continental Africa titles to follow. Many African boxers in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, South Africa, Namibia, DRC Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Ethiopia, Cameron, Botswana, Congo Republic, Cote D’Ivoire, and many other countries have earned their names and living through IBF Continental Africa and AMEPG titles respectively. Many more others have proceeded and fight for higher IBF titles i.e. International, Intercontinental and world titles. IBF/Africa has since expanded its horizon by including Middle East, Arabian and Persian Gulf region and it continues to benefit many more boxers fighting for its titles. Apart for its initial IBF Continental Africa titles, it has added IBF Africa, Middle East, Arabian and Persian Gulf Title to be known in as IBF AMEPG titles. Coincidentally, the Nephew of the former IBF/USBA President Robert Lee Sr. is the current President & CEO of IBF/USBA, Hon. Daryl Peoples) The Africa, Middle East, Arabian and Persian Gulf are dynamic and growing regions which IBF has been and will continue to spearhead successfully.
