WI crumble as Afridi leads the way published by arichard on Sun, 07/14/2013 - 14:30 GEORGETOWN, Guyana – West Indies bid to open their One-day International series against Pakistan strongly was undermined, when a brilliant, all-round performance from Shahid Afridi saw them suffer a 126-run defeat on Sunday here. Marlon Samuels led the way with 25 and Darren Sammy was not out on 21, but West Indies were bowled out for 98 before a full house at the Guyana National Stadium with Afridi claiming 7-12 from nine overs with his flat, fast leg-spin, making him a shoo-in for the Man-of-the-Match award. It West Indies’ lowest ODI total against the Pakistanis and their worst against any team on home soil, as Afridi claimed the second-best figures ever in this form of the game. Coincidentally, Jason Holder, whose fast bowling had given West Indies early control, was Afridi’s final victim, lbw for a four-ball duck to hand Pakistan victory with 54 balls remaining. The result meant West Indies fall behind in the five-match series which continues on Tuesday at the same venue, where another capacity crowd is expected. Holder, playing his fourth ODI, had fired the early shots in the series with a career-best 4-13 from 10 overs before Afridi defied speculation about his place in the visitors side, hitting six fours and five sixes in 76 from 55 balls to propel them to 224 for nine from 50 overs. The 21-year-old Holder extracted appreciable sideways movement, if not bounce, from the pitch and had Pakistan reeling on 23 for four before Afridi put on 120 for the sixth wicket with Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq, whose 52 in contrast came from 121 balls, to put the visitors back in the game. West Indies were set back early, when Johnson Charles was bowled for a first-ball duck, undone by seven-foot tall left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Irfan in the very first over. Darren Bravo was caught behind for five, gloving a short, rising ball into the ribs from Irfan down the leg-side, and fellow left-hander Chris Gayle was run out for one in the space of four balls in the fifth over, leaving West Indies seven runs for three wickets. Lendl Simmons and Samuels failed to gain much traction, as Pakistan’s bowlers wheeled away to seize control in the so-called middle overs. When Simmons overbalanced and was stumped for 10 in the 23rd over, West Indies had slumped to 41 for four and the challenge confronting them had reached crisis proportions. The wickets of West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Samuels and Kemar Roach effectively sealed the outcome, although Sammy with a typical flourish in the closing overs provided a bit of drama for the dumb-founded crowd. Earlier, Holder bowled Ahmed Shahzad for five off the bottom edge in the fourth over, when the opener tried to leave alone an awkwardly bouncing delivery, and followed up, bamboozling Mohammed Hafeez with an off-cutter that extracted the off and middle stumps with the final delivery of his next over. Holder was rather fortunate in his next over however, when umpire Joel Wilson dubiously adjudged Nasir Jamshed lbw for one. He produced a full-length delivery that straightened on the left-handed opener, but TV replays suggested the delivery did not do enough to threaten the timberwork, striking the batsman outside the line of the off-stump. Holder kept the pressure up on the Pakistanis, when he had Asad Shafiq was caught behind for a one-ball duck in the 10th over from a loose drive, which Charles, keeping wicket, snaffled, diving low to his right. Rain broke the West Indies momentum, when it stopped play after 40 minutes with Pakistan reeling on 23 for four in the 10th over. After a stoppage of half hour, Holder and Sammy kept the visiting pair of Misbah and Akmal scoreless for 36 deliveries between them. Holder and West Indies felt they had a fifth wicket, when Akmal, on zero, appeared to edge Holder to Charles in the 14th over, but umpire Wilson was not satisfied this time, although TV replays seemed to support the home team’s claims. Roach made the breakthrough in the 21st over, when he had Akmal caught at mid-on for 19 before Afridi and Misbah transformed their side’s fortunes. West Indies were almost powerless to stop the marauding Afridi, whose 50 came from just 35 balls, when he struck Sammy for consecutive boundaries in the 33rd over before he was caught at deep mid-wicket off Kieron Pollard in the 39th over. The home team collected three more wickets, including Misbah, whose 50 came from 119 balls, as Pakistan added 57 in the closing overs to gain a late boost that stirred their bowlers.
