WIFE BEATING --DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Most unfortunately, wife beating is widely prevalent all over the world. Again, most unfortunately, even husbands who claim to be highly educated or deeply religious indulge in this criminal activity, though they might try to rationalise their behaviour. The risk of serious harm to wife is more in countries like USA where everybody has the Constitutional right to bear arms--even fire arms. As one Senator noted during the debate in the United States Senate in 1996, “all too often, the only difference between a battered woman and a dead woman is the presence of a gun.” US National Institute of Justice stated: When a gun was in the house, an abused woman was 6 times more likely than other abused women to be killed”. A 2014 Judgment of US Supreme Court says: This country witnesses more than a million acts of domestic violence, and hundreds of deaths from domestic violence, each year. In India the number will be substantially more because of much larger population. Some years back, when I was giving the Key Note Address on Rights of Women at a workshop in Law College in Kakatiya University, I asked the audience consisting of more than 300 men: How many of you have never raised your hand on your wife?
