WILD HORSE WARRIORS URGENT (pls share) Send POLITE public comments before June 30 RE: NAVAJO NATION (Government) HORSE ROUNDUPS June 26, 2014 at 4:26pm The Medicine people and elders and traditionals among the Dine [the Navajo People] are firmly opposed to the Rangeland Improvement Act and they need OUR HELP with comments, OPEN TO PUBLIC COMMENT BY ANYONE...Navajo or not. The People and horses have endured horrible - inhumane and dishonest - roundups of horses there, including very young foals left being behind without mother or family bands - who are helpless and will suffer and die alone, without them. ******The horses are being sent to slaughter ****** Whats happening on the Navajo Reservation is pretty bad - a couple steps worse than what the BLM does to wild horses and burros - they dont bother verifying that the horses are properly and legally permitted (via the Navajo Nation permits) to be on the reservation...the contractors are using ATVs (against Navajo government regulations) to round up the horses. WE NEED WILD HORSE & ANTI HORSE SLAUGHTER ADVOCATES TO SEND COMMENTS before June 30. please see photos and read the TWO Press Releases below ~ the first is a statement by the Dine Elders and Medicine People opposing the roundups, the second is the press release from the Resources and Development Committee. We need to encourage and ask that the NN Government uses humane PZP protocol for their wild horse herds and forbids any of their members from rounding up horses and sending them to slaughter. >> Your written comment could simply be a statement of non-indigenous solidarity with those Navajo who oppose the proposed Rangeland Improvement Act if you are not a Native American, or non-Dine solidarity with them, if you do have American Indian status. AND/OR >> We need polite good political comments, NOTHING INFLAMMATORY OR RUDE - PLEASE BE CIVIL AND FACTUAL! Written comments may be sent to [email protected] BEFORE JUNE 30 PLEASE READ 1) Press release from Dine Elders and Medicine People may be shared with press via PDF BELOW: indigenousaction.org/wp-content/uploads/DHA-Resolution-Oppose-Horse-Rd-up.pdf Dine’ Elders and Medicine People Unanimously Pass Joint Resolution Urging Navajo Nation to Comply with Fundamental Law in Treatment of Horses and Expressing Opposition to the 2014 Rangeland Improvement Act HERE IS THE ARTICLE about that PRESS RELEASE The two traditional groups also asked the Navajo Nation to conduct a formal and thorough investigation into alleged horse theft by those the Nation employed during the round-up, charging that some of the horses taken during the round-ups were professionally trained with brands and grazing permits.Mr. Leland Grass of Nohooka Dine’ said, “Horse theft and cruelty is a serious crime, it victimizes both the people whose horses were taken and it victimizes the horses. As traditional people we see every horse as sacred and when we treat them inhumanely we violate our own sacredness as human beings”. indigenousaction.org/dine-elders-and-medicine-people-issue-resolution-to-stop-navajo-nation-horse-slaughter/ The meeting itself is also open to the public and if you can go, feel free to do so on June 30, 9 a.m. ~ Tsaile, Arizona ~ (oral comments will be limited to 10 minutes per person) Dine College Gymnasium 1 Circle Dr. Route 12 Tsaile, AZ 86556 ** Dine College campus map can be found here: dinecollege.edu/about/tsaile-campus-map.pdf For more information or for media contact, please call Jared Touchin at 928-871-7160 or 928-871-6358 Martha Ellison is the Advisor for the Resources and Development Committee, her number is 928-871-7170 * WATCH LIVE ON THE WEB by visiting USTREAM.TV and typing Navajo Nation Council in the search box * 2) Press Release from the Resources and Development Committee regarding this meeting may be downloaded here and shared with the press - navajonationcouncil.org/pressReleases/2014/JUN/DRAFT_Navajo_Rangeland_Improvement_Act_of_2014.pdf Resources and Development Committee to hold public hearing at Diné College for the proposed Navajo Rangeland Improvement Act of 2014 WINDOW ROCK – The Resources and Development Committee has scheduled a public hearing for the proposed Navajo Rangeland Improvement Act of 2014 on June 30, 2014, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Diné College Gymnasium, in Tsaile, Ariz. The proposed Act would change the authority of the director of the Navajo Nation Department of Agriculture, to include the management of grazing permits, the appeals process, and supervision of the Range Technicians. In addition, the proposed changes would establish the duties of the Range Technicians, replacing the District Grazing Committees and District Land Boards. If the proposed changes take effect, the Department of Agriculture would manage the grazing permits, following a transition period that includes the review and reissuance of the permits. Processes for permits in the Navajo Partitioned Lands and McCracken Mesa, seasonal permitting, and regulations to determine eligibility for grazing permits are also addressed. Other areas include grazing fees, grazing district boundaries, fencing, range units and management, conservation management plans, improvements, recreational livestock, use of motor vehicle, burials, construction in livestock water development areas, wildlife assessment, and livestock trespass. Rules on enforcement, impoundment, and civil sanction and appeals processes are also covered. The proposed Navajo Rangeland Improvement Act of 2014 may be accessed at navajonationcouncil.org under the “News” tab. The public is encouraged to attend the public hearing and to submit comments prior to June 30. Written comments may be sent to [email protected].
