WILLING HEART OR ITCHING EARS. The apostle Paul, near the end of his life, warned his preaching protege, Timothy, of a coming time when many people who professed to be Christians and count themselves as members of Christian churches would reject established biblical truth and favor fairy tales about God, his word, his will, and his ways: For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths (2 Tim. 4:3-4). No longer would the majority of church members reform their thinking, believing, and acting because thus says the Lord. Instead, many professing Christians would demand that the Bible say what would agree with how they wanted to think, believe, and act. Paul foresaw this travesty; Timothy dealt with it in his day; great preachers and pastors like Tozer, Martyn Loyd-Jones, and Ravenhill dealt with it in the twentieth century; and we are dealing with it today. Ask yourself: As a custom, do I open up the Bible and invite God to speak with the intent of believing, trusting, changing, and inviting Him to conform me to His word by His Spirit? or As a custom, do I open up the Bible with my mind made up and my lifestyle firmly set and make the Bible say what I want it to say in order to validate me? The first question indicates a person who is committed to sound doctrine while the second question illustrates a person with itching ears syndrome. The first question is indicative of a true follower of Christ; the second question is indicative of a devil in disguise. Watch this clip: youtube/watch?v=V8bfzu8Xuhw
